Kathleen, I KNOW!!!!It is as if he just "appeared" on the planet at the age of 26 when he married his wife Bridget! And with Bridget I had two different spellings for her maiden name and I was STILL able to find her brothers and her parents.
The flowery marriage certificate you mentioned is a page from Bridget's Bible.I was really hoping that she would have done a family tree in there some place, but there was nothing for generations going back . . . only forward . . . which I already knew all of the information on any way.
I found a record of their marriage online here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDDK-63N Do you know how I would go about seeing the actual document to see if it lists any other clues?I am new to this genealogy research.I really only started this year, around Easter. My Grandfather just mentioned (out of the blue) that he always wanted to know where his Hagerty side of the family came from.We know a LOT about his mother's side of the family (Gillespie) and we can even trace back to "this is the town in Ireland that we came from" . . . he always wanted to know that for the Hagerty side.He is 91 years old now, and I kind of saw this as something on his "bucket list" that I wanted to try and do for him.
Witnesses at the wedding . . . what if Maggie was someone married to a relative?Or if she was his sister, but that was her married name? How do you even figure that kind of stuff out?
I have contacted the cemetery. The were not even able to connect the dots that Edward's son's were buried there until I found a record that said that they were . . . now I know the plot locations for all of them.Maybe I should go to the cemetery and just look for other Hagerty's buried there.
I have considered that some things are not correct . . . I have seen his date of birth (off of his age on a census) being anywhere from 1865 to 1870.On every census I have found he lists his father's place of birth as Ireland, but on his death record his father is listed as James, born in Canada.
So, for those Hagerty families that you found . . . would you suggest that I "follow them" and see if they match up?I guess without knowing his Edward's parent's names for sure I am not sure how to go about verifying that families on a census are his family of origin.
The one with the CLOSEST date is the Edward Howley. It matches a lot of the information that I know . . . born in Detroit (or at least the same county as Detroit is)Father's name is James (which is what it said on the death certificate) but the mother being born in Michigan throws me off.If she was born in Ireland I would like this one even more.
Oh, the VERY last one that you listed was one of his son's . . . Edward Henry Hagerty Jr.
