I am researching the Scanlans of Garraunboy, Killaloe, Co. Clare and am using the notes that my grandmother wrote in the 1950's to aid me in my research. This is what she wrote in her opening paragraph: 'The Scanlan family originally came from North Kerry - somewhere near Listowel. In Cromwellian days they got the choice of keeping their lands and changing over to the new religion or going “to Hell or to Connaught” – which included Clare. Only one member, Andrew Scanlan, became a pervert (my grandmother’s choice of word, not mine!) and was allowed to retain the family estate. He was forever afterwards referred to as Andy the chicken. The other members of the family settled near Newmarket-On-Fergus, Co.Clare. Later on an Edward(Ned) settled at Gurtmagee, Killaloe, Co. Clare. His son was also known as Ned and his grandchildren were: Ned, John, Patrick, William and Michael who was Administrator in Castleconnell parish and later was P.P. in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary 1844 - 1869.' Now I am trying to find where my ancestors originally came from in Co. Kerry and to make the connection between Kerry and Clare. I know this is a long shot but if this rings a bell with anybody I would be delighted for any extra information.
