Hiya Stephen, many thanks for your reply.Yeah, those are our Delaney's.
Jeremiah b. Ballinakill and Maria (?) were our paternal great, grandparents and their daughter, Christina b. abt. 1874 Liverpool was our Dad's mother - our grandmother.
We don't know anything about Maria's origins except that she was Irish by birth.
They settled in Liverpool and raised their 3 children, Jeremiah, Christina (our grandmother) and Mary.
Christina married Christopher REID b. 1872 Liverpool and this is where the surname DELANEY now becomes REID and we start searching for our REID ancestors, who we always thought were of Scottish descent.
I have my grandfather's (Christopher REID) birth certificate which shows his parents names as James REID & Elizabeth SMITH, both living in the same street in Liverpool at the time of the wedding. Also I have their marriage certificate which gives their fathers' names as Alexander REID, a cooper, and Thomas SMITH, a labourer.
Unfortunately, it doesn't say where they/or their father's were born, so now I'm trying to trace Alexander REID and Thomas SMITH back in time.
I found an Alexander REID (b. Ireland) in the 1871 census for Liverpool. He and his wife, Margaret b. Ireland, have several children all of whom would have been born after our great grandfather, James REID.James is not listed but as he would have been about 23 years old by then it's possible this is his family and he was away at sea. All of their children were born in Ireland, except the two youngest who were born in Liverpool.
If this is our Alexander and James REID then we have spent years looking in the wrong country for them!
The family names are there as are the names Alexander and Andrew. Also, there are twin boys and my dad often spoke of his father having had uncles named Alexander/Andrew and of one of them going to Canada to live!
I'm now trying to find anybody else descended from Jeremiah DELANEY's family of Ballinakill and his wife Maria so that the gaps can be filled in, particularly regarding Maria's surname and her background history.
Have you any connection with this family? Are you from Ballinakill?
My sister and I visited Ballinakill about 4 years ago and spoke with Father Sean Conlon and Christy O'Shea, who were both very helpful.
We also met the DELANEY brothers from the pub there and I had a contact email address etc., for their other brother Thomas DELANEY in England and their sister Brigid but I moved house and then my computer crashed and I lost all my stored information and email addresses so I can't contact him now!
