Has anybody any information regarding the family history of one James REID and his father Alexander REID?Are you related to them?
They were my great grandfather and great, great grandfather respectively.
The 1871 census shows Alexander REID and his family living in Liverpool. He was a cooper.
The information says that all the family were born in Ireland, except for the two youngest children who were born in Liverpool. However, it does not say where in Ireland they were from.
James REID had married Elizabeth SMITH in 1870 (in Liverpool) but I can't find either of them in the 1871 census. James would be about 22/23 in 1871 so I assume he was away at sea but I don't know why Elizabeth (now REID) isn't showing up!
I have a copy of James' marriage certificate in Liverpool to Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of Thomas SMITH, a labourer but it doesn't say where the two father's were living/or from.
Their son, Christopher REID (my grandfather) b. 1872 Liverpool is shown in the 1881 census as living with his aunt and uncle, Charles and Mary LUCAS both born Ireland.
It's possible his mother (Elizabeth)had died during/soon after his birth and his father (James)was away at sea.
I can't find his grandfather, Alexander REID, in this census at all!
My dad always thought his paternal ancestors were of Scottish descent but clues are now pointing us towards Ireland.
Does anybody have any connections with the above and can help fill in the gaps?
My dad always believed his family to be of Scottish/Irish mixture but the records seem to be directing us to Ireland for both sides of the family - the DELANSY'S and the REID'S.
