I've just begun to work on my Irish side of the family and am finding geographical divisions very confusing. My great great grandmother, Catherine Dooley, came from Killinure, Upper Woods, County Queens. With help from people on the RootsWeb County Laois mail list, things are becoming clearer.Upper Woods was a barony equivalent in size and location to the Civil Parish of Offerlane. Baronies were commonly referred to in earlier times but apparently are not used that often these days. The Civil Parish of Offerlane is roughly made up of the Roman Catholic parishes of Camross, Castletown, and the northern half of Borris-in-Ossory. These parishes are in the diocese of Ossory. Offerlane is in the northwestern part of County Laois.
My gggrandmother Catherine Dooley came to the US (CT) in about 1860 and married Edward Fitzpatrick, also of County Queens, born about 1840, though I have nothing more specific than that.
