Yates family of Castletown
on behalf of my mother in law Sheila Glover nee Yates I am attempting to trace any family she may have in County Laois.Sheila arrived in Castletown in 1928 as a five year old from Salford England. Her grandparents William and Helen Yates accompanied her. Helen`s maiden name was Keenan she originated from County Laois. William we think was born in Manchester England. They children Henry, Kathleen, Joseph and Albert travelled with them other children stayed in Salford amongst them Sheila`s mother Marion.
Marion arrived in Castletown approximately three years later with her young son Henry (Nendy). The cottage they lived in was just outside Castletown it was owned by Ryan`s Farm, Sheila remembers playing with the children of the farm; Phyllis, Moria and Seamus. The parents of these children were Patrick and Kathleen Ryan.
The farm was possibly a stud farm as she remembers a horse by the name of "Romany Roy". Sheila attended the Roman Catholic school and church in Castletown. In 1933 Marion took her two children to live in Mountrath, three years later they moved to Liverpool England.
We believe that Kathleen Yates stayed in Castletown, married and had four children and that she lived in a bungalow just outside Castletown. If anybody knows of this family or indeed theRyan family we would like to here from you.
