Michael Flynn and Rose Winter--to US in 1875

By Joni Vella May 16, 2004 at 11:04:45

Locations in Ireland named in sources here in the US are County Meath, West Meath, and Drogheda, County Meath. Not certain as to which is the correct location!

Michael Flynn, age 50, a farm laborer, his wife Rose, age 40, and their children, Joseph age 13, Thomas age 9, Catherine age 7, Michael age 4, and Mary age 2, arrived in New York on September 27, 1875 aboard the S. S. Erin, which came from Liverpool, England, and Queenstown, Ireland. They travelled in steerage, and homeland was given as Ireland.

This family appears on the 1880 census of Stark County, Illinois and was in Washington County, IOwa by the mid 1880s.

The Lena mentioned in the 1880 census and Mary mentioned in all other records are probably the same person. All records indicate five children.

Michael Flynn seems to have died before 1895, possibly by 1890.Rose Winters Flynn lived until after 1920.

Two of the children were deceased by 1910, Joseph, and I assume Michael.Mary died by 1920.

Daughter Catherine married John Patrick Tobin, daughter Mary married Thomas Tobin, son Thomas married Julia Boyd. These three marriages occurred in Washingotn County, Iowa.Son Joseph married Margaret Dwyer/Duire, this marriage took place in Louisa County, Iowa.

Son Joseph ended up in Nebraska, son Thomas ended up in Minnesota. I do not know about the others, but at least some of them stayed in Iowa.

Joseph Flynn and Margaret Dwyer were my great-grandparents.

Any additional information about any of these folks would make my day!

Thanks,
Joni (Flynn) Vella
