Usually the infant was baptized a few days after birth. However, sometimes the parents didn't have the requisite donation - perhaps one or two shillings. In these cases baptizm was delayed from a few weeks to a few years. Some 95% of the Gaelic-Irish were dirt poor. A shilling was enough to feed an Irish family for several days - or the landlord's rent.
