Hi, It seems we are in similar positions. My gg-grandfather was born in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone in 1818.His name was Charles Hood Irving. He worked at Hood & Company in Newtownstewart - therefore I guess there was some relationship there. The store opened in 1820 and is in operation still, but no one will answer my e-mails. He emigrated in 1840.
His ancestors at some point came from Scotland where they were the Irvings of Bonshaw which was once a castle. I have read his parents were both born in Ireland, so it would have been sometime prior to 1800 for sure that they came back to Ireland.
Many of the border clans seem to have ended up in County Tyrone or nearby.Among them Maxwells, Johnstons, possibly Hoods - some were from Scotland - Graeme/Graham, Armstrong, Keith, Crozier are all names prominent in both Borders of Scotland and County Tyrone. My gg-grandfather named one of his sons Samuel Crozier Irving.
My ancestors, I've read several places, were quite close with Robert the Bruce - the 17th for sure, unknown about others. So, if we were part of all these things so well known etc., where the heck is the info about us ???And where is the information about Hood and Company ?I have looked up many versions of queries - construction, the address, ownerships etc and cannot find anything much about this business which has been in operation for 191 years serving as a general store, furniture, design and construction, funeral services and supplies and the post office and nothing about who started it etc.
This info may not have been of much help, but we can hope.Perhaps we've other ancestry bits in common. Thanks and good luck ! Carla
