Hi Patricia Thank you so much for your suggestions but I've already searched the records for Killanne C of I church which are held centrally in the RCB library in Dublin. Joseph Rowe first had an illegitimate daughter, Jane, by ?? Hanrahan. Jane was baptised in Killanne in March 1852 by E Butler. The word 'illegitimate' is written across the baptismal entry. Joseph married Ann Watkins firstly in a civil ceremony in Enniscorthy register office on 17th Oct 1854 and then again in Templeshanbo church on 20th Feb 1855. I have copies of both certificates. They had six children - William Nicholas Rowe, born 8/7/1855, baptised 26/8/1855 in Killanne, died 9/9/1918 in Alberta, Canada Elizabeth Rowe, born 5/4/1857, baptised 7/6/1857 in Killanne Catherine Rowe born 16/7/1859, baptised 28/8/159 in Killanne Robert Rowe born 27/11/1861, baptised 2/12/1861 in Killanne Joseph Rowe born 17/1 1865, baptised 2/4/1865 in Killanne, died 28/2/1949 in Vancouver Edward Rowe born 29/1/1867, baptised 14/4/1867 in Killanne, died 12/12/1935 in Vancouver.
William Nelson Rowe joined the RIC 12/9/1887 and gave his age as 20 years and 6 months. This would make his birth date March 1867 so Anne Watkins could not have been his mother.
All rather perplexing!
Another odd thing is that on the baptismal record for William Nicholas Rowe, the mother's name is left blank!
