I had posted from 2001-2002 regarding surname Murian. After receiving documents from the Railroad where my grandfather Richard Murian worked and his passport and evenhis declaration of intent - there were no new clues. It turns out the surname was Murnieks. My grandfather served in the British Merchant Marines and stated in some old letters that the Americans could not quite get the name correct so he did indeed change it to Murian. One of his nephews is Laimdots Murnieks, the Latvian artist. Another nephew ended up in Australia and the family saw one of my posts and solved the mystery. My great grandfather, Frederich (Fricis) Murnieks died in Latvia 14 May 1943.When I receive a letter from another relative in Latvia I have to send it to my Australian cousins to translate it.The online translations don't always work. Thanks to all who tried to help me solve this.
