My great-grandparents, Beshara and Sultaneh Elhilow, immigrated with their children (Sam, John, Mary and Said)to NYC from Jezzine, Lebanon in 1920 via Ellis Island on the Olympic. Our family name was pronounced Hilu or Helou in Arabic, which my grandfather said meant sweet. The name was altered to Elhilow by Ellis Island officials.
Beshara Elhilow was a shoemaker and had a shoe shop in Brooklyn, NY, where the family settled. Sam Elhilow was my grandfather and he, Said and Mary settled in Brooklyn.John Elhilow settled in Massachusetts.Mary is the only one still alive.
They were Maronites and belonged to Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral in Brooklyn, NY.The family was originally from Jezzine Lebanon.
Other family relatives have last names of Khirdahi and Arrajj.
Upon tracing my roots, I would appreciate any information on the town of Jezzine, Lebanon or any possible relations to my family tree.
