So far, I have been concentrating most of my time on my mother's father who was a Shantery, a very uncommon name and easier to trace. My mother's mother was a Hajjar. This is what I know so far. My grandmother, Lena Hajjar, born in 1890 in Beirut, her sisters, Anna (born ca. 1889 in Kab Elias) and Ethel (born 1891), and her brother Elias (born about 1881 in Kab Elias) arrived in the U.S. through Ellis Island in New York about 1900 and settled in eastern Massachusetts. Social security documents and death certificates for Lena, Anna and Elias Hajjar list their parents, with some spelling variations, as Marad Hajjar and Meena Sukar who apparently never emigrated. Lena Hajjar married Naseef (Samuel) Shantery in 1919 and settled in the Lawrence/Methuen area of northern Massachusetts. Interestingly, Naseef was also born in Kab Elias, a small mountain village in 1884. The Hajjars and the Shanterys must have known each other. Lena and Sam had two children, Lucy Shantery and my mother Juliette Shantery. Lena died in 1973. Anna Hajjar married Said Nassiff in the 1910's, settled in Fall River in southern MA. and had several children. She died in 1957. Ethel Hajjar's married name was Saab. She also settled in the Fall River area and had three daughters. Ethel died in 1980. Elias Hajjar settled in the South End of Boston, MA and had a number of children including three sons, Louis, Edward and Frederick, who carried on the family name. Elias died in 1959. I don't know any more right now except that there were many Hajjar 'cousins' in Lawrence who visited my grandmother frequently when I was very young. My grandmother's family may have stayed with some Hajjar cousins initially. Finally, my grandmother appears to have had a younger sister, perhaps half-sister, who remained in Lebanon/Syria and whose married name was Marion Howie. Any further progress may have to wait for the coming release of the 1930 census. I haven't found the passenger ship records nor the naturalization papers for my grandmother yet. The 1910 and 1920 census have not been very helpful so far. Dennis Houle, Cotuit, MA.
