My grandparents arrived in 1919 from Lebanon and settled in Maine, where, in the early 1920's, they perished in the famous influenza epidemic. My father was raised in a monestary so there is not much known. Although our family name became Simon, I was told that he was our brother-in-law and the real family name sounded like: Heikel. I always disbelieved this since this name sounds so Germanic. Now that I have found this web site and saw the names in a few Mid-Eastern publications, I realize that it could be spelled in a few different ways and Heykal and Haikal are what I've seen recently. But maybe you folks know something I don't. So let me list what I know. Thomas Bernard Simon is my dad, he was born on 11/26 1918 and died in Somerville, MA in 1983. His sister Mary and her daughters are all deceased as well. Thomas' parents (whose names I don't know) came from Beirut after WWI and settled in Ogunquit, ME. I am hoping to find out more. Are you my relative?
