My Grandfather Tobia Isaac with his wife Hala emigrated to New Zealand from Becharri in Lebanon around 1893 or 1894. Whenarrived in New Zealand because they lacked good english they were given the surname of Coory which is a bastardisation ofFakrhi their Tribal Name. I believe that the 1st part of Fakhri as pronounced probably sounded like a swear word and as such may have offended others. Surnames did not exist as such in Lebanon as people were known by their ancestors names, House Name & Tribal Name and very little was written down. My Grandfather changed the Surname to Isaac in the 1920's as that was his Father's Name. I believe that he had Brothers and Sisters who emigrated around the same time to North and South America who may have had the surname of Fakhri, Fagre or Isaac and I would dearly love tomake contact with their descendants as I am currently workingon a Family Tree. I believe the Brothers Names may have been Khalil, John and the Sister's Name Rose. It may be that we are distantly related I don't know but it would be interesting to find out.
