I do not agree completely with the response you received on the Tamez name being Spanish. It all depends on the location of the family roots---Spain, Morocco, Middle East, Italy, etc. Certain "Spanish" names are considered Spanish NOT because they are Spanish, but because the families live in Spain or in one of the Spanish speaking countries in the Americas. Once traced back to the original roots, the family may not necessarily be Spanish. I would suggest to you, that you study some Catholic (17th Century, 18th Century, and 19th Century) records from Spain, Mexico, Italy, and the Middle East. Birth records in particular will provide for you a very strong direction as to where parents or grandparents may have come from. For example, I was doing some research several years ago on the family name Chapa. I assumed it was Spanish. After some extensive digging into 18th Century Catholic birth records ("nacimientos"), I discovered that the name Chapa was a Spanish abbreviation (from the 18th Century) for the Italian family name Chappieri or Chappiera. Many of the family came to the Americas (by way of Mexico and South America) and shortened their names because it was easier to "hide" their nationality amongst the natives. Thus, Chappieri or Chappiera became Chapa. Tamez could be a shortened form for the name Tamezzini or Tamezzina. I couldn't say because I haven't done research in this line. It could also be an extension of the Middle Eastern name Tammez or Tammes which could possibly be Middle Eastern. Another example:The name Perez or Peres is assumed by many to be Spanish. It is NOT. It is Middle Eastern. You will find it listed in the Bible of Middle Eastern culture. Don't assume the name is Spanish or Middle Eastern until you have done some extensive research on the derivation of the surname. One final example: The name Ramirez or Ramires is assumed to be Spanish. Again, it is not. It's roots are via Spain (Ramirez, Ramires, Rameres, Ramerez), via Morroco (Rameres, Ramera), and finally Algeria (Ramera, Ramires, Ramirez)which is its true roots. I hope this helps.
