I may have already entered the name but can't remember.I've looked at so many sites. His last name is spelled Papovic.Like you are saying though...his H was added once he arrived to the U.S.
I tried the www.archive.org site and was able to find the Yugoslavroots.com site. There are 30 headstone entries but the name is spelled Popovic instead of Papovic. If the name is actually spelled Pop...that could certainly explain why I've not been finding anything.
I got excited today because I found some ship manifests for a V Papovic and a Vaso Papovic, but the direction of the ship was wrong with the date and the year couldn't possibly be right. The first one was Vaso Papovic, estimated birth was 1896 (three years off of what believe) and the date of the departure was August 13,1913.His port of Departure was Trieste, his ethnicity was Dalmation?????, and the ship was the Kaiser Franz Josef I.His estimated age was 17 and his birth location was Biskupya, Austria. Now my Great Grandfather's mother was German and his father was Yugoslavian.Could it be possible that he was born in Austria? The dates are only three years off which would actually make him ten years older than my Great Grandmother.Who knows?Maybe he wasn't telling her the truth about his age?If so, it could be for any reason.
The second one was V Papovic, departing New York and arriving in Galsgow.Date of departure was June 13th, 1904 on the S.S. Ethiopia. They were both listed as men without children.
My Great Grandmother said he was seven years older than she.Based on her birthdate in 1906, that puts him at 1899, even if they didn't record or celebrate birthdays we can verify the year. The full date is August 15, 1899.
