Christchurch Horticultural Society articles in the Star newspaper 1874 - 1876 mention that Mr W Napier (who won a number of prizes) was gardener to Mr James R Lysaght.
A search on Paperspast has revealed that JR Lysaght lived at Elmwood, Papanaui Road.Elmwood was originally built for R H Rhodes. The Press newspaper advises that an auction of furniture, household items and stock was being held on 26 August 1874 as Rhodes was returning to the UK.It appears that Lysaght leased the property at this time until he returned to Hawera in 1877.
Another notice appears in the Press stating that an auction of household items of JR Lysaght was being held on 26 October 1877 as he was moving to the North Island.
The Christchurch City Library has a photo of Elmwood c 1899 online.Notes with it state that this was the second building as the original was destroyed by fire in 1882 and rebuilt in 1884.This building was demolished in 1954 (purchased under the Public Works Act for Heaton Intermediate School).
I have contacted the Canterbury Horticultural Society.
Can anybody help me with information or suggest who I might contact about the original Elmwood (particularly the gardens).
My interest is in William Napier and the time that he worked for JR Lysaght at Elmwood.
