Where are pre-1900 canal death records?
My great-grandfather Charles T. Ferguson of Malden, Massachusetts, died of malaria while working on the Panama Canal prior to 1900. Although he was among thousands of malaria victims, I can find no record of his death, which I estimate to be around 1894. Records for U.S. citizens began in 1904, after the U.S. took over the project from the French and are kept in Washington. But what about Americans who died while working for the French, and who apparently are buried in Panama? Any clues are most welcome.
