The archives of the first Société de Panama (Compagnie universelle du canal interocéanique) and the liquidation of this Société, have been given to Monsieur Lemarquis, vice-président of Société générale, and deposited in the Archives Nationales, le 3 octobre 1950.
The papers of the liquidation contained a large amount of documents which could not interes the historiens : all the files of the obligataires and the registres of obligations that M. Lemarquis gave to the "Société des bons à lots". Regarding the papers of the Compagnie universelle du Canal interocéanique de Panama, they did not arrive in M. Lemarquis hands in their totality. On the 22 of march 1904, the Président of "Tribunal civil de la Seine" authorized M. Cautron, the "liquidateur de la Compagnie universelle du Canal interocéanique de Panama, to destroy, not only the registres and dossiers of the service of coupons and shares but also some interesting documents in the histoiry of the canal like : the files of the deceases happened in the Isthmus, together with 150 volumes of records correspondance at arrival and departure, all the boxes regarding the "service des travaux pour l'achat de matériel", the "dossiers du personnel" of the "ancienne compagnie licencié en 1889 et 1894", etc.
The 19 of june 1906, a new autorisation given to the same liquidateur for the destructionof registres, documents, papers of "recettes et de dépenses" forming the archives of the "Compagnie universelle du Canal interocéanique" dating more than 13 ans. In addition, by the acte of "cession des biens" of the Compagnie nouvelle de Panama to the Etats-Unis (16 april 1904) the plans and archives kept in Paris were given to the Américains. This explain why the papers kept at the Archives nationales, except the printed reports, contain so little technical documents. Regarding the archives of the "Compagnie nouvelle du Canal de Panama", of which copies of papers were given by M. Lemarquis, he could not say what they had happened of them. The inventary was done by E. Guillemot.
