As part of my ongoing research into my father’s time in the Merchant Navy, I have recently ascertained from my father he spent time in Balboa receiving treatment for an infected leg wound at an American Army Hospital.
My father (William Frederick Champion) was discharged from the SS Hazelbank in Balboa, Panama on the 28 August 1947. He remembers spending quite sometime convalescing, but can not remember for how long.
Once discharged from Hospital he was instructed to catch a bus to Colon where he was met by a Shipping Agent who took him to a tanker destined for Liverpool, and signed on as a Displaced British Seaman.
I am particularly interested to find out any information regarding his time in Hospital, the Hospital location etc.
Any details regarding his Hospital discharge, his journey to Colon (bus and road conditions etc) and the Shipping Agents who met him and the tanker he sailed home on would be appreciated.
