Hi Thomas,
I’m afraid without the EXACT name of Joseph Gubal~a’s (the “L” has a Polish diacritical mark through it) ancestral home in Poland, locating his parents John and Mary “Wontone” (sp?) will be almost impossible.
Having said that, there are a few U.S. records for John Gubala and his family that may help you in locating his Polish ancestral home.
First, let’s confirm that we have the correct Joseph Gubala.
There are 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. census records, WW I and WWII Draft Registration Cards and a Baltimore passage record for Joseph/Josef (aka Frank) Gubala/Gubla/Gublo.
The 1900 U.S. census is indexed as Joseph “Gobult” living in Bloss Township, Tioga County, PA.
The 1910 U.S. census is indexed as Joseph Gubala living in Bloss Township, Tioga County, PA.
The 1920 U.S. census is indexed as “Frank Gublo” living in Bloss Township, Tioga County, PA.
The 1930 U.S. census is indexed as “Frank Gublo” living in Bloss Township, Tioga County, PA.
The 1920 U.S. census is indexed as Joseph F. “Goblo” living in Bloss Township, Tioga County, PA.
The WW I Draft Registration Card is indexed as Joseph Stanley “Gubla” living in Tioga County, PA.
The WW II Draft Registration Card is indexed as Joseph “Gubla/Gublo” living in Tioga County, PA.
The Baltimore passage record is indexed as Josef Gubala from MSZANKA Austria/Poland.
According to the documents, Joseph (aka Frank) Gubala was born on February 8, 1879 (or 1880?) in the village of Mszanka (population 868) now located in the gmina of Luzna, the powiat (county) ofGorlice and the province of Malopolskie. He married Anna “Kortsep” (sp?) around 1902-03, presumably in Tioga County PA.Anna was born around 1886 in Austria/Poland.Joseph and Anna had six (6) children, all born in Pennsylvania:Mary born in 1903, Stanley born in 1905, Frances born in 1909, John born in 1911, Leon born in 1913 and Helen born in 1917.
Joseph immigrated to the U.S. between 1901 and 1902.Anna immigrated to the U.S. between 1898 and 1902.Joseph was still not a naturalized U.S. citizen by 1940.Joseph was employed as a coal miner and chemical worker.
As I indicated earlier, there is a May 29, 1901 Baltimore arrival record for a Josef Gubala. His destination was Landrus, PA (now a ghost town near Blossburg) where he was going to join a Wojciech Wojkowicz.A couple of his traveling companions were also headed for the same place. They all listed their last residence as Mszanka Galicia (Austria/Poland).
There are 253 adults with the Gubal~a surname currently living in the Polish county of Gorlice.
Good luck,
Norbert
