I guess this feels like a long shot, however I am trying to trace any of my Grandfathers family, back to Oporto in Portugal..from what I have been told by my father, he would have been a young boy, I think early 1900 when his father, a political figure, was shot dead and the family scattered.
Jose Maria Da Silva, was taken onboard a sailing type ship I think and was befriended by the ships doctor and his wife.He sailed for his entire life but landed in a village called Turnchapel, near Plymouth on the SW coast of England. He met my Grandmother there and they lived in the village all their life.He died in 1967.
He worked on salvage ships in the English channel during the war, his ships were torpedo'd twice and we have very little real evidence of his true age etc?
He did use the name Joe Silva when he landed in England due to the unusual surname at the time.....
Im hoping that some Portuguese connection still exists that remembers some sort of political issue, a riot or shooting in Oporto (now Porto).
