I've spoken with a relative who is fairly sure that the Romanian spelling of the name is "Lupea," and that the "R" was added when they came in though Ellis Island.
Unfortunately, it looks like all of the Lupeas on the Ellis Island site are from Hungary, not Romania.
I do have some other information, however.
George Lupea(r) was born in Luica-Ilfov in March 1885, and moved to Mercurea, Sibiu around age 3.His father, Ioan Lupea(r), was originally from Mercurea and was born there on 3 Jun 1856.George's mother was Ana Buhai, who was born 9 Feb 1859, and married Ioan in Luica-Ilfov on 14 Aug 1880.She eventually followed her children to the USA, but her husband did not.
George came to America in 1902 or 1903.About 1914, he married Elizabeth Campeanu, age 17, who was also from Romania. Then they had the four children I mentioned in the earlier post. The oldest, George Jr., was born in Indianapolis. The other three were born in Detroit.
I would be very interested in any useful resources for tracing back Romanian lineage, particularly these three family lines (the Lupea, Campeanu and Buhai lines).
