Greetings! I am trying to locate the village of my grandparents so I can pursue research both in the US and Romania. My grandfather was John Popa, born about 1890 in Austria-Hungary/ Romania. He came to Alliance, OH in about 1922.His wife was Eleanora Posta, born March 15, 1888, also in Austria-Hungary/ Romania. The Romanian church in Alliance, OH lists the village that they came from as Mesenta, Romania.I have been unable to locate a village by this name in any gazeteer or source. None of the local Romanians I have talked to have ever heard of this place. To make matters more complicated, the church listing for John Popa indicates that Mesenta is in the vicinity of the city Alba Iulia, while the listing for Eleanor places Mesenta near "Tarnava Mica," the latter being another name which I cannot locate.(All I can find is a place called Tarnava in NW Bulgaria.) The name John Popa without a middle name or initial, or a precise birth date, and without a village has been impossible to trace. Can anyone help me find Mesenta? Michelle Dillon Alliance, OHI'm posting this query in several forums--so please excuse any duplication.
