I am very new at genealogy and am hoping for ideas. I have the following information:
My grandfather Nathan Zelmanovics b 8/13/1883 Maramaros Szighet RO died 5/11/1957 Brooklyn NY Arrived NY 5/3/1904 via Ellis Island - reflects he was going to his brother Max Zelmanovits in Cleveland OH
My grandmother Grace (Gisella/Geza) Katz b 6/10/1888 Budapest HU died 8/27/1958 Brooklyn NY Arrived NY 6/9/1907 via Ellis Island -reflects she was going to Mr. Katz at 723 E. 5th St NY NY
I have a letter dated 1926 from Hungary requesting money, and the address to send the funds to is: Mor Zelmanovits Sigethul-Marmatiei Calea Regele Ferdinand 42 Europe
The letter references the following names: Mayer Zelmanovits, Malcsi and Moricz Zelmanovits as well as the names Etel, Mihaly, Berczi, and Irene.
I also found on the Ellis Island site, someone by the name of Heinrich Prand who was visiting a Max Zelmanovics. I wonder if there could be a connection to Nathan's brother in Cleveland.
Nathan and Grace had the following children: Max, Jack, Sidney, Sarah, Minnie (all deceased).
If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate a return email.
I think my next step would be to locate Nathan and Grace's marriage certificate and can only assume they were married between 1907 (when Grace arrived in NY) and 1908 when Minnie was born. Can anyone offer any clues on how I would do this short of visiting NY?
Could this have been an arranged marriage?
Can anyone offer any additional hints, clues, or ideas?
