I've just learned of relatives by marriage named Franz and Anna or Amma JEAN, who had a son named Franz Hugo JEAN.
Franz Hugo JEAN was living in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1897, according to his marriage record. He was born in "Roumania," to use the old spelling on the marriage record, as were his parents.
I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that these names don't sound very Romanian. In Hoboken, Franz Hugo married a woman of German descent, and I suspect his name originally was JAHN and that his people were ethnic Germans, though from "Roumania."
Would appreciate comments from anyone who knows about Romanian genealogy/history. Think I'm on the right track?
