A man I believe to be my great uncle, Israel Burger (also spelled Berger) was arrested for a murder in Cernauti in May, 1935. He was a low level gangster, born in Philadelphia and released from prison in 1934 or 35, after a sentence commutation. I have no idea know he wound up in Cernauti, who he killed, or why--the little I know is from an wire service story printed in the LA Times. His family emigrated to the US in 1883 from Russia. Since a 1910 census has Russia as country of origin for his parents, and Cernauti was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time, I doubt this is where his family was from.
I have no idea where to begin research--in Romania, or Ukraine (where Cernauti is now located, and called Cernowitz). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
