On the 5th of June in 1900, the Abraham Hecht family lived on Allen Street in Manhattan, New York City.Abraham was 40 years old and had been born in Austria as were his parents.He had been born in August 1859.He had been married for 14 years.He had been in America for 14 years arriving in 1886.He was working as a shirt maker.His wife was Sarah age 32 born in Austria in February 1868 to parents born in Austria.She had given born to seven children but only 4 were still alive.She had also come to the United States in 1886.The children, all born in New York, included “Arvin” age 11 born in August 1888; Benjamin 9 born May 1891; Charles age 5 born in October 1894; and Clara age 3 born in December 1896.(Census enumeration district 187, page 5A, Manhattan, NY, NY.
On April 15, 1910 a census taker visited a Hecht family living in an apartment on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan in New York City.The head of this family was Abraham Hecht who was 47 years old and had been born in Romania to Yiddish parents who had been born in Romania.He was working as a city street cleaner.He had come to America in 1887 and was a naturalized citizen.His wife was Sarah age 42 also born in Romania to Yiddish parents also born in Romania.They had been married for 22 years.She had given birth to 8 children but only 5 were still alive.Living with them were Harry age 21, Benjamin age 19, Charles 14, Clara 13 and Philip age 5.Harry and Benjamin were salesmen for a printing house.The other children were in school.(Census enumeration district 401, page 2B, Ward 12)
On the 2nd day of January in 1920 a census taker visited the Abraham Hecht family living in an apartment building at 1702 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York.Abraham was 57 and had been born in Romania as were his parents.He was a factory watchman.His wife was Sarah age 54 and also born in Romania as were her parents.She did not work outside the home.They had three children living at home including Benjamin age 29, Charles 24 and Philip age 15.These boys had been born in New York.Benjamin was a clerk in a telegraph office.(Census enumeration district 1196, page 1A, Manhattan Assembly district 17)
On the 15th of April 1930 a census taker visited a Hecht family at 2121 Harrison Avenue in the Bronx, NY.The head of this family was Abraham Hecht age 67 born in Romania as were his parents.He rented the apartment for $55 a month.He owned a radio and was not a veteran.He worked as a laborer at a customs house.His wife was Sarah age 64 born in Romania as were her parents.He was 24 and she was 19 when they married.Both came to the United States in 1885.Two of their children and two boarders lived with them.The children were Ben and Philip Hecht.Ben was 29 and worked as a clerk in a postal telegraph office.Philip was a blocker in a ladies hat factory.(ED 605, page 23B, Bronx, NY.)
