My grandfather, John Grell, was born in Keisd in 188a.He came to Cleveland Ohio in 1905/1906.He married Katherine Krauss in 3/1906 in Elyria OH.Their first born, Katherine was born in 1907.About 1908, they returned to Europe, had two additional children, Susan in 1909 and Margaret in 1911.I found today his naturalization card stating he arrived back here in 1912.He purchased property here early in 1914.A fourth child, Michael was born in 8/1914.From then until 1923, I have no real record for them. The property they purchased was considered farmland/suburb of Cleveland until 1923 and from what older cousins have indicated, they lived and worked a farm in Brooklyn township. The house built on property here wasn't occupied until 1926.A fifth child George, was born in 1923 and Jeanette, my mother was born in 1926.
My grandfather shared very little with any of us and until recently I did not know that he had siblings, most of whom remained in Europe. My mother had written their names on a piece of paper, which I found in my father's family genealogy book.
There was a Michael Grell, a little older than John, that resided at the same place in 1906 according to city directories. He apparently was from the same village.I have been unable to determine if Michael was John's older brother or cousin.Children descended from Michael and I have communicated recently and there are too many factors that could indicate that we are related.Marriages in both lines between Grells and Fograschers, the name Knall, Scheel, Zekeli, are familiar to both lines.Stories from both sides indicated those who married Catholic were banned from the family.
I also know that he returned to Europe at some point after 1914, but I don't know if his wife and children returnec with him.I can't confirm any location here until 1923.I know he was there in 1917, as I had found a shipping tag with that date. I also was told that he returned to Europe several times to bring people to Ohio as he 'sponsored' several individuals.I also have been unable to locate his point of entry in to the US.
My grandfather John, married Katherine Krauss, who was raised in a convent, soon to become a nun, and one of the other Grell family's uncles was always shunned. Both grandparents rarely shared information about their families in Europe.
I had traveled in August 2006 with the ATS to Transylvania and was able to communicate with a woman in Keisd, visited the church, but unfortunately was unable to access church records or visit the cemetery, due to a knee injury. The woman informed me that there were descendants of a Grell-Fograscher union who lived a few houses away, but they were not home at the time.A few days later, I might have been able to make connections with other relations that would be arriving from Germany for a visit.I seemed to miss all the connections.
I understand that all the church records were actually in Schassburg and if I could write to the bishop there, I might be able to get some information.Does anyone know what that address is, and how exactly to I address the envelope - here it is: person address city, state, zip
I know the the numbers are much different in Romania. Is there an email address?
It is a long story, but before I left for Europe, I had made connections with the grandniece of the woman I visited. After my return, she informed me that she knew my mother's cousin and then supplied me with information which I did not have.

I also know that George Albert Grell resided in Elyria, Lorain, OH around the time my grandfather John, married Katherine Krauss in 1906.George Albert Grell was the uncle in their line that married Catholic.
