I have recently started researching my family and I am already stuck.
I was raised with the story that my great grandfather served in the Russian Army (sometime before WWI) before coming to the US. A relative swears that he saw my ggf's discharge papers/booklet. He described it as a booklet with a red star on it. I am unable to verify this or any of the information in it since my cousin can no longer find the booklet. Has anyone else heard of such a booklet or papers?
All the information I can find online (ancestry.com & other sites) are saying he was Austrian or possibly Ukrainian.
According to the only record I am able to find on his death states that he was NOT a US citizen.
I cannot even find anything with his actual birth date or birth place on it. Lucky me.
Here's all I know..
The American spelling of his name: Steven/Stephen Markovitch
Born between 1883-1885
Any help or resources you can point me towards(other than ancestry.com or familysearch.org) is greatly appreciated.
