My paternal grandmother, Elisabeth DUPON was a young Belgian refugee housed in Hawick Castle (with 40 other Belgians) from 1915-1919. I have been told that they arrived in June 1915 and that there may be an article in the Hawick Express on June 15, 1915.
Her mother Pharailde DUPON kept pictures of the Geldhof Family - as well as postcards from several handsome young Scottish officers. I am happy to exchange scanned copies of my photos for any info anyone may have about either the Belgian Refugees in Hawick and/or specifically any of my ancestors that were there. Some names:
Peter VERSTRAETE (step-grandfather of my grandmother, Elisabeth) Mathilde-Melanie VERSTRAETE nee LANNOYE (paternal grandmother of Elisabeth and originally MM was married to Carolus Ludovicus DUPON) Pharailde DUPON (nee VERHELLE - Elisabeth's mother) Edmond DUPON Jr. (Elisabeth's older brother) Elisabeth DUPON Prosper DUPON (Elisabeth's younger brother).
They returned to their hometown of Ichtegem, West Flanders, Belgium in 1919.
