Re Uncle No 3. Winters L J Private 2/30 INF BN Army No NX 596
My grandmother's first husband also died after the sinking of the Rakuyo Maru.
Have you read "Return from the River Kwai" by Joan and Clay Blair, "Death on the Hellships" by Gregory F Michno or "Heroes at Sea" by Don Wall or "Ships from Hell". "Heroes at Sea" contains honour rolls of all those who were aboard the Rakuyo Maru.
Also see www.cwgc.org
The new POW memorial at Ballarat, Victoria, opened in February this year (2004) and would include your uncles names.
I have been told that for a person to have been on the Rakuyo Maru that they must have been part of "A" Force under Brigadier AL Varley, AIF.
Have you managed to locate a POW Card for any of your uncles. These apparently existed but I think many were destroyed and I am unsure of how to obtain copies of those which survived.
Please get in touch direct if I can help any further. I have lots of websites you may be interested in.
