Robert Jerin, Thank you so much for your response. I have the information you requested.
John Sluga was born July 4, 1873, Litija. The birthdate maybe be in inaccurate, but it made for some great storytelling. :) I know he had at least two brothers, Gottleib, and Ignatz. His father's name was Janus (I believe).
Maria Potchnik was born in 1880, Also in Litija Slovenia. I do not know her birthdate.
They were married in 1900 or 1901 in Litija.
At the time of Johann's immigration Ellis Island records say he was living in Krain (SP?) Slovenia, leaving from Havre, France on the Latourine, on June 27th 1903 arriving NYC July 3, 1903.
My grandmother followed leaving Aug, 22 arriving on August 31st 1903 using the name Maria Schluge. She left from Antwerp on the Zeeland. It was right around this time that they changed the name from Sluga to Schluge. However on census, draft card and other documents, they used both names on and off for years before settling on Schluge decades later. Immigration records say she was living in Neumuhle, Germany at the time of her immigration.
Ellis Island documents say my grandfather was headed to Cleveland when he came here. But a month later, when my grandmother and their young son, John, Grandpa Sluga (Schluge) was living in a coal mining town of Herminie II in southwestern PA.
I know Grandpa was a member of the SNPJ from nearly the beginning, joining probably in Herminie I or II.
From there they briefly moved to Virden IL (his WWI draft card was signed there; then to Ringo, Crawford Co. Kansas, then back to Virden, Macoupin Co. Illinois, where they stayed until their death.
I hope this helps. Thanks so much for the help. Cilla Sluga
