Dominick Orneto Arneto Anthony, born March 20, 1851, Madrid
Spain. His father arranged a marriage for him when he would come of age and Dominick didn't want to go through with the arrangment. He packed his little bag and at nine years of age, ran away from home.He boarded a ship headed for America and of course, was caught on the way there. He refused to tell the ship's Captain who he was or who his parents were for fear of being sent back home to a severe spanking, so the Captain of the ship took him under his wing and watched over him until he was a young man of age.At this time, Dominick met Bill Cody who was travelling around America with a Wild West Show.Bill Cody was, of course, better known by his stage name of Buffalo Bill.Dominick, being the handsome young man that he was with wavy black hair, handle bar mistache and deep set dark eyes and especially with his ever present eye for adventure was eager to accept the employment of Buffalo Bill in his fast paced Wild West Show.He soon became a respected friend of Buffalo Bill and when his memoirs were written, he sent a copy to Dominick inscribed, "To my wayfaring friend", signed Buffalo Bill.It isn't known if it was during his days with the Wild West Show or when Dominick was working for the ship's Captain that he met the Governor of the area. But at some point in time, he did meet and become friends with the governor of the area that is now California, Oregon and Washington.During the time of the Spanish/American War, this friendship came in very handy.Dominick had purchased a farm in Oregon and his neighbors, fearing that he would be a sympathizer for Spain, were coming to his home to string him up.Dominick was waiting to meet them and to protect his land and his family any way that he could.Just then, the Governor's men came swooping down over the mountains to the rescue.By this time in Dominick's life, he had married. One day while he was out, a storm began brewing. His young wife went out to the barn to calm the horses and while she was out there, one of them rammed against her, pinning her next to the wall of the stall. She died from her injuries. He later met and married Elisabeth Belldora Redshaw who was born on May 7, 1864 in the state of Iowa. Her parents were Joseph C. Redshaw, born in 1834 in Indiana and Emily Jane Manary, born in 1834 in Indiana.
Together Dominick and Elisabeth Belldora had three children; a son Francis, a son Eble January Anthony born January 2, 1892 in Fossil, Oregon and a daughter, Ena October Anthony born October 14, 1899 in The Dalles, Oregon.Dominick's land was beside beside the mighty Columbia River.Being the entrepeneur that he was, he thought it would be an enterprising idea to start a ferry business to take traffic back and forth across the river. It would otherwise be a very slow, burdensome journey for anyone needing to cross the river. His business was very successful. On Dominick's property there ran a steady stream. He decided to build a water wheel on it.He had the foundations walls up and was putting the water wheel into place, when he lost his footing and became pinned between the water wheel and the foundation. His son, Ebel, ran back to the house to get help.Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, Dominick had already been in the cold water for a length of time.He later developed pnemonia and died from his injuries.Elisabeth Belldora was grief stricken.Dominick had been the love of her life. Now she was left to raise three children and run a farm on her own. Many men came forward for her hand in marriage and she did accept another proposal. But when she felt that they didn't truly love her or the children, but were only seeking property, she divorced them.On Elisabeth Belldora's death bed, she lovingly and longingly called out to Dominick. She thought she saw him everywhere. It was with a smile upon her lips that passed peacefully into her final rest.
