A few days ago my eye fell upon the name of Capt. Hercules Burleigh who was at the siege of Derry. Was he so named for his great strength too? His grandson was the Surgeon, Geo. Burleigh, who with his wife, Rebecca Kingsley and son is buried at the Dutch church in Jaffna. He was with the2nd Ceylon Regt.under the orders of the Duke of York. Would anyone know if this church still remains?. The Dr. died aged 55 in 1826 and was married to Rebecca Kingsley. His dau. Arabella Cope married Cosby Warburton, an ancestor of the French Gray family. The Burleighs and Warburtonscame from Ireland, having fled theredue to their Jacobite sympathies. The Burleighs having settled in 1649, their ancestor being Capt. of a war ship which was under the window of Carisbrooke castle where King Chas 1st was imprisoned. The Capt. was imprisoned himself in Winchester but escaped to Ireland. The Surgeon entered the Navy in 1792 as Surgeon's mate aboard the Brunswick and was on board during the actionin 1794 under Lord Howe.
