I have been trying to find out if court records from 1816 still exist in the Sri Lanka archives. I have emailed the archives but never received any response. Does anyone anything about what records they hold?
I am seeking information on an ancestor, Andrew Graham Chalmers who was a sergeant in the 73rd Regiment (Black Watch) of the British Army. He was handed over by the army to the civilian authorities on 4th November 1816, who tried him for the assault/attempted murder of his wife Jean Chalmers. He was found guilty and put in Colombo jail. He was released from jail on 21st February 1818.
I have checked the records held at the Public Records Office in the UK and they do not hold any court records from the period the area was under British administration. I have also checked and as far as I am aware there are no newspapers for Ceylon/Sri Lanka dating from this period.
