I have searched about the name Dorta, D'Orta, Dortas, D'Ortas and possible variations. One of the oldest I found was Samuel Abraao D'Orta or Dorta who immigrated to the city Leiria in Portugal, from Salamanca in Spain. He lived there for many years (1490) and he had a Printing business with his family. One of his relative alredy born in Portugal named Garcia D'Orta or Dorta. My family side is from Brazil. During the Dutch Invasion 1624 in the Northeast of Brazil one of the commanders was Pieter Van Dorth and I have found Manuel Van Dorta when searching old documents. It means some of the Dorta family joined the Dutch governor and helped them during the invasion. In some point Dorth or Dort came also from Spain. When the Inquisition came to Portugal Samuel Dorta or D'Orta family left Portugal and went to Pesaro in Italy where they had the Printing business as well. But it seems they were already before in Italy. Now there is a large number of Dorta in Canary Islands (Tenerife). It maybe the ones who imigrated to Brazil and met there the new generations of Van Dorth or Van Dorta. I will be glad to share more information regarding Dorta, D'Orta, Dortas, D'Ortas.
