HI everyone, I have lived in Canada since I was seven so I don't know much of my family roots. I was wondering if there is any family history on my father's side Weerahen(n)edige Fernando particularlyWeerahennedige Edmund Fernando, who was auditor/clerk in the oldBritish colonial government. My grandfather died in 1943-1944.All I know is Weera Puran Appu "Francisco Fernando"stories and whatever else Tyronne Fernando wrote in newspapers. I created the Moratuwa group on Facebook and had many people join, and found from some history of Moratuwa that we originate from the original founder of Moratuwa "Lak Vijaya Singukith Senevi."
The best information that I got about my family history comes from the DeFonseka website, that Fonnie Fonseka has done such a great job maintaining.
I was wondering if anyone else can find some history. I know for example that our family had the first Sri Lankan or Sinhalese lawyer (Barrister or Solicitor) under the British.
It's interesting to note that many of my cousins (even those from my aunts) still live in Uyana, Moratuwa around St. Joseph's church or other parts of Moratuwa, though my father's family officially belongs to St. Sebastian's.
As well anyone know my mother's side family history, from my grandfather Panagodage E. Richard Fernando. He was a major timber merchant in Moratuwa during the 1940's to1960's.
Both sides of my family were known to be UNP supporters during the 1940s to 1960s (though my cousins are not necessarily the same being supporters of Mahinda Rajapakse). My ammi's father, PER Fernando was a big supporter of Ruskin Fernando who helpedthe UNP defeat the LSSP in Moratuwa.
I haven't been to Sri Lanka since I got married in December 2003, but I would be interested in tracing my family history. If anyone knows of places, especially in Moratuwa where I can trace my history the next time I visit I would appreciate it.
