Have looked up websites ever since I read info on one of them about Dutch Burgher surnames which may be Jewish in origin or of Jews who converted to Christianity since Holland and Amsterdam had many Jewish merchant families. The surnames supposedly of Jewish origin are given as: Isaacs, Joseph,Daniels, David, Solomonsz, Nathanielsz, Ephraums, Meier etc. Now I find that an individual named Fretz who left several descendants in Lanka was Jewish?? Furthermore, I have seen on a website that certain surnamessuch asKlein, Stein are not necessarily Jewish. Nor is Kahan which is Irish and Hermon/Harmon derive from the German for soldier:Hereman and has nothing to do with Mt. Hermon!!! We do know that Jewish families did change their surnames to Brittain, Lawson etc, even Smith and Bloomfield (Blumfeldt) However, I have seen yet another website with the info. that after the Crusades, Christian knights were given, Hebrew, Biblical names such as David, Daniel and Isaac????I do know that my own very Germanic surname of Winter after the season was also used by Jewish folk and also Schneider which is a tradename for cutter or tailor also Goldsmith(Goldschmidt)as there were English Goldsmiths too. I believe Oliver Goldsmith the author was'nt Jewish? The Duchess of Cambridge's Grandma was a Goldsmith so now some refer to her Jewish roots?? David Cameron was surprised to hear of his Jewish roots too. From all this I am beginning to wonder if all our ancestors came from the land of Judah? or previously from Eden for I suppose all who believe in that Biblical tale about where the first humans, Adam & Eve supposedly dwelt, would deem the whole world to be ofJewish origin. Archeologists etc, now believe this place really did exist and have an idea where it may have been from Biblical descriptions. A most interesting fact, the late Princess Diana had an Armenian forbear from India, a very tanned Miss Kevork who may have been half Indian/Asian, She had children by a Scotsman, Forbes who were taken to Scotland. Mitochondrial tests on the relatives of Miss Kevork etc show that this DNA is of a very rare, small group found only in India amongst Armenians who intermarried with Indian Asians. Who da thoghtit????
