Hi, Fiona - try e-mailing Vama Vamadevan of the Ceylon Society of Australia at his e-mail address ( Vamadevan@aol.com )- Vama wrote an article in the Society's quarterly mag. "The Ceylankan" published in May 2000 entitled "Were There Jews in Medieval Ceylon?" - he's also the author of a recent book on Sri Lanka's Muslim community and its history. The current (Oct 2000) edition of the mag. has a short article called "More About Jews In Sri Lanka" which is a precis / adaptation of an article published in the Colombo "Sunday Island" of July 31, 1994. This article relates to Portuguese Jewish settlers in Ceylon who took up "generic" names like de Silva, Salgado etc. to integrate more easily. I can fax or mail you copies of both articles if you e-mail me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org with your fax number or mailing address. Sincerely, Joe Simpson (BC, Canada, ex-VSO teacher in Galle, Sri Lanka, 1973-4).
