I am searchiing for records of my paternal g.grandfather, Archibald Conway-Croom who was in Ceylon during the 1800's as a Planter in an estate called Dolosbage in the Gampola district.
Any help would be of grately appreciated.

Dear Serena I do not know whether your ggf was a relative of Lieut James Conway. His second wife Mary whom he married in Colombo on 6 December 1817, opened a school for boys and girls in Hospital street Fort on 15 July 1872 Mary died on 6 July 1829.(Ref Lewis-Tombstones and Monuments )An English teacher by the name P.J. Conway was with the Roman Catholic Mission in Jaffna in 1871.Again I do not know whether there was any connection with your ggf. Your grandfather Charles Conway as you may know was employed at Lake House and lived for some years with his mother(the Indian tamil lady)who brought him up,at St Michael's Road Kollupitiya, and later at Moors Road, Wellawatte. I have not been able to find any info on Archibald Conway, but will contact you should I have anything of interest. Regards Hugh Karunanayake

Many thanks for the info.
I am not too sure whether there is any connection with the James Conway and PJ Conway you mention but it is still good to know that there were Conways in Sri Lanka during the same period as my ggf.
My paternal grandfather was not brought up by his mother at St. Michael's Road or Moor's road. He lived in both places after he was married. It was my father Chris Conway and his siblings who were brought up there.
My gf was living with his mother in Gampola and then came down to Colombo, where he married and then moved into St. Micheal's road with my gm.
My great grand mother however, I understand was a Samuel (I think this was her maiden name) and she lived with her relatives in Colombo, down the lane which adjoins Methodist College (I am not aware of the name of that road).
Would you by any chance know of these Samuels? At least this line are probably living somewhere in Colombo??
Please do let me know if you are able to gather any additional info regarding this.
