I am searching for information on my maternal great-great grandfather Strong and his family, residing in Ceylon in the late Victorian period. What I know is as follows:
Edward Gray STRONG B. 19 June 1826 in Bruges Belgium to Lieutenant William Burrough Strong and Margaret Winter (nee Gray) Strong Occupation: Civil Engineer (apparently designed & built bridge near Kandy) He "married" (not sure if they were married) a "Portuguese lady" (according to family lore, my guess is she was of mixed Sri Lankan & European ancestry) Their children:
Charles, b. 30 Apr 1869 in Columbo. Later became a tea merchant Lucy, b. 1871 Was described as a "poet", and died young GEORGE STRONG (my great-grandfather), b. 1873 in Ceylon (date inferred from age in 1881 census) The above 3 children (all described as b. in Ceylon) appear in the 1881 U.K. census as residing in Pulborough, Sussex as wards of Mrs. Maria Power (this is consistent with the family story that the children were raised in England while the father remained in Ceylon)
Any help or suggestions any of you might have regarding finding more information about Edward Gray Strong and his children would be appreciated. I am especially interested in finding more information about the identity of my great-great grandmother.
Regards and best wishes for the holiday season, Paul Arnold, Toronto, Canada
