I have been searching for information about my grandfather: Collin Dunbar WILMOT and my ggf: Edward Pennystone WILMOT for about 15 years.
In particular I would really like to obtain Collin Dunbar WILMOT's birth certificate.
I have tried and pre-paid for an application to the Registrar General (Colombo 7) via a personal visit to the Sri Lankan High Commission in London but, alas to no avail :-(
[In a last ditch attempt,I emailed the National Archive with an enquiry last week]
Name: Collin Dunbar WILMOT Date of Birth: 1st March 1882 Place of Birth: Kandy or Colombo Father: Edward Pennystone WILMOT (believed born in UK?) A tea plantation manager * believed to be E.P. WILMOT Mother: ??? (believed born in Ceylon)
The above information was obtained from his merchant seaman's papers.
* One source that was very helpful were the Planters' Association of Ceylon and they very kindly searched and found entries in a number of Ceylon and Ferguson entries for:
E.P. WILMOT 1885/1886 and 1893 - Planter, Derby Estate, Gampola 1887/1888, 1890 - 1892 - Forwarding Agent, Kandy In 880 he was Superintendent of the Ceylon Company Ltd, Nawalapitiya, the head office of which was at St Clements House, Clements Lane, London EC.
The real tragedy I discovered during this information gathering was the dispersal of the old Ceylon Association (London) Library believed to have taken place in the 70s/80s - I wonder what happened to all the records?
Has any one seen either of these names?Any ideas on further sources?
