I’m searching for my great grandfather, AXEL FRITHIOF GABRIEL JOHANSÉN, born October 3. 1875 in Stockholm,Sweden.
He emigrated to the USA in September 1905 and arrived September 30. in Boston, Massachusetts. Port of departure was Liverpool, England. The name of the ship was “ Republic”. The ship was owned by the “White Star Line”.
He came from Oslo, Norway via Hull in England. Departure was 15.9.1905.
He originally came from Stockholm in Sweden to Norway in 1896/97. For a period of time he worked as a “Rallar” a railroad worker. Building the Bergensbanen, near Myrdal and the tunnel Gravehalstunnelen. This was made from 1895 to 1898.
He also worked as a carpenter at the Skar Kruttverk (gunpowder and ammunitionfactory) just outside Oslo. At that time Oslo was called Christiania. Axel was married to Petra Moen in 1899, and they then moved to Raufoss (Rødfoss) some 150 km. north of Oslo.
Here they got Margaretha Lovise, born 1899 and Einar Gabriel, born 1904.
In 1905 , due to the fact that Norway could get in war with Sweden, Axel decided to emmigrate to the US. Rumours in the family say he was staying with the norwegians in the States, since he had been living for so long time in Norway. People also think he was killed since his letters stopped comming.
Here are some of the letters he wrote:
1. One mentioning Warren, near Oslo in Minnesota.
2.From Akeley, 28-11- 1905. First he was working at a sawmill, then the railroad.
3.The Lake Shore Hotel in Crookston. Address: 636 South Main Street. Polk County. Minnesota. Proprietor: Ole Anderson. Written on paper from Crookston Lumber Co. Club. Here he is using the name Axel Johnson.
4.Letter from Bemidji- Minnesota of 5. of June 1907.
5.From Walker- Minnesota of 18. Of August 1907. This letter is from Pine Tree Hotel. Proprietor is Albert Carlson.
This is the last letter he writes to Norway. All his letters to Petraduring the period are loveletters, telling how much he is missing her and their children back in Norway. He also writes abouthow he wants them to come over to the US when he has enough money.
Maybe he was killed, maybe he went further west to find work. Maybe he started a new life with a new family somewhere else? In one letter he is talking about Chicago, becauseit isto many people looking for the same jobs as he is. And that he feels he could be more lucky in a big city.
