My ancestor, Johannes Ulrich Kreis, emigrated to America from Germany/Switzerland in 1866. He called himself "John" in the US. In various documents, he lists his place of birth as "Switzerland" and in others as "Germany". Would anyone have a theory as to why this was? My theory is that perhaps he lived on the Swiss/German border.
He stated his occupation as "laborer" and "glass blower". He lived in St. Louis, MO in 1874, in Ottawa, La Salle, IL in 1880, in Chicago, IL before 1910 and in Irvington, NJ from 1910 until his death in 1937.
He married Maria Hausmann in Ottawa, IL in 1872. Their son, Johannes Christian Heinrich Kreis, was born in 1874 in St. Louis and is my great grandfather.
