There are parts of Switzerland that "jut into" Germany. A lot of my family came from Bebbinben which is bordered on three sides by Germany. Also, after the Hundred Years War (or was it the Thirty?), whole areas of the various German states were devastated and many of the counts, dukes, bishops, or leaders of a state would invite the Swiss to come to their state, promising them land and/or protection from religious persecution. On my mother's side, most of the family were "religious dissidents" (mostly Brethren and Mennonite), and the histories are all over the place. Some made use of the Mennonite Underground Railroad. Some took several generations to get to America, with one ancestor in Switzerland, the next generation in one German state, then another state, and finally America. So it might have depended on how question was asked. I hope that is some help. It's frustrating for me to sort through all those German states. Not knowing German doesn't help either.
