My goal is to SEE photos/microfilms of the actual records here in the USA if they exist here in the USA. If they are only accessible by traveling in person to Ukraine, then they will remain a secret for me.
The Ukrainian government began ruling the Hungarian village of Patakos, Bereg, Hungary in 1912, which was previously known as Patkanyócz Beregh Megye before 1899. Apparently, Hungary does not have the records for this village or any other village that was previously in Hungary but is now in Ukraine.
My understanding of the situation is that when Ukraine began rule of the area, the records remained in the village (probably in the churches) and the Mormons were NOT allowed by the Ukrainian government to copy the records, so since 1912 no one outside of Ukraine has been able to see the records. Am I wrong?
The family I am searching for is Carpatho Rus / Byzantine/Greek Catholic - they are not Ukrainians. The village got stuck in Ukraine's borders. I believe the Ukraine web site is simply reporting the year that they began governing the village, and perhaps when the Ukrainians themselves began recording information for that village.
I am not aware of any copies of the 1850-1911 church or census records from Hungarian villages (that are now ruled by Ukraine) here in the USA. So that's why I have asked the question, "Has anyone actually seen these records here in the USA for this village for the time frame 1850-1911?" If so, please direct me to the film #'s and repositories in the USA. Have I overlooked something that the FHL has?
