Happy New Year Richard !!! ________________________________________
Both Iliuk/Iluk and Iliv are Ukrainian surnames.Iliv, the rarer surname of the two, probably originated in selo Iliv > today Mikolayivskij raion> Lvivska oblast > Galicia Province??? The Austro-Hungarian Emperors encouraged Galician labor migration to Bukowyna.
To date Iliuk, the much more common surname, was/is more common to Bukowyna.
Either/or it is spelled w/one L in Ukrainian. _____________________________________
What we sometimes forget is that many villagers emigrating from what is Ukraine today were barely educated. The average village education during the turn of the century was 3 grades, leaving most semi-illiterate.
Many coming from Bukowyna and Galicia did not carry a passport. They used theirMETRYKA (Baptismal Certificate) as ID documentation.
