I am sorry to write that the interviewer was amateurish. It was not clear who the Lemko were in relationship to being Ruthenian/Ukrainian.The information that there were/are quite a few micro-ethnic Ruthenian groups with their own distinct dialect and culture was muddied by the interviewer. He hadn't done his homework. A better interviewer would have provided more direction and focus.
What is Ukraine today was technically not a geopolitical entity for many centuries. This was typical of Eastern Europe overall. That is why Regional Gazetteers play such an important role in Genealogy, when researching ancestry in this part of the world. Ascertaining exact place of origin and locating a viable gazetteer are key to performing one's family research in Eastern Europe.
IMO language is frequently the one and only brick wall, however even that can be overcome by participating in the various Internet Genealogy Forums.
